Checkpoint: Ambulance disaster
This week's edition of CheckPoint investigates the state of emergency medical services in the Eastern Cape.
JOHANNESBURG - A year ago, after public hearings into the disastrous Eastern Cape emergency medical services, there was a glimmer of hope that pleas were being heard.
Recommendations included that the Health Department equip remote districts with four by four ambulances.
But despite the horror stories of friends and relatives who could've been saved had ambulances arrived on time, or been properly equipped and staffed, the situation remains as dire as ever.
Checkpoint Producer Busisiwe Gumede went where ambulances have never been.
According to Section 27 of our constitution no one may be refused emergency medical treatment.
So what's happened in the Eastern Cape and why do officials blame everything and everyone except themselves for not fulfilling their mandate?
