JOHANNESBURG -
Calm has been restored in Dunoon, Western Cape, after violent protest action flared up overnight.
Residents went on the rampage looting Somali-owned shops and blockading roads with burning tyres.
Last week they marched to the Civic Centre, demanding responses to their housing concerns from the mayor within seven days.
Foreign shopowners started to pack and leave the area in fear of their shops being looted again.
“They break my shop last night, they take all the stuff. And my uncle’s shop now they break it. They take all the stuff, all the fridge, all the stuff they take it. I don’t know what I must to do now because I don’t have anything,” said Somali shop owner, Abdul Udon Aloow.
Last week, residents marched to the Mayor’s office, demanding prompt answers to their housing issues.
“Residents are fed up and feeling tired of not getting answers from government. It should at least be able to come here and give them answers about what they are looking at doing to develop this overcrowded community,” said one of the residents, Anele Sofuthi.
Several roads were closed while police maintained a heavy presence in the area.
