Magistrate condemns mob justice Midima first grade magistrate B en Chitsakamile has deplored acts of mob justice in the country saying the malpractice is a dangerous way of curbing crime.One of the recently killed suspected thieves.Chitsakamile was speaking on Thursday during court proceedings at Midima first grade magistrate court in Blantyre where he passed sentence to 39 year-old Lloyd Kavuluza who is a victim of mob jusice.The magistrate sentenced the suspect to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour but the sentence was suspended to 24 months during which time he should not commit similar offences.  Kavuluza sustained serious injuries after a mob attacked him when they caught him stealing. “People should not take the laws into their own hands. Mob justice is a dangerous way of curbing crimes. It leads to serious injuries and death,” said Chitsakamile.In recent months, there have been an increase in cases of mob justice in the country.Malawians claims that the malpractice is increasing because they have lost trust in the Malawi Police Service who have failed to crackdown on some serious crimes. According to the Police, at least 16 people have been killed in mob justice attacks in the past three months, the most reported being in Nsanje where seven suspects were attacked and set ablaze by a mob for being found in possession of human bones.Recently, the United Nations Commission for Human Rights expressed worry over the killing of suspects and called for speedy prosecution of the culprits.
