UPND Battle With Running Mate Dilemma
The United Party for National Development is just barely holding on with vice president in charge of administration Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba shadow boxing with his counterpart for administration Dr Canisius Banda over the running mate slot.
Mwamba, popularly known as GBM has put through his case to UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema that he should be the man to get the nod ahead of everyone for the running mate slot.
He has cited his having been thrown in cells over remarks made against President Edgar Lungu and also his having built a strong army of violent youths that has served as the party’s defensive mechanism.
Hichilema has remained evasive on the matter with his close lieutenants dropping hints that he is toying with the idea of cancelling out President Edgar Lungu fielding a woman as a running mate by going with either Dr Christine Kaseba or Maureen Mwanawasa for his running mate.
Dr Banda is not counting himself out and has recently come out strongly saying he should be the natural choice for the running mate position as he joined the party when it was not fashionable to join the party.
Under the new constitution the vice president position has been elevated to an electable position.
